Coluccio Named America East Player of the Week
Junior Brandon Coluccio
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC junior catcher Brandon Coluccio (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township/Brookdale CC) was named the America East Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon. Coluccio hit .583 (7-for-12) as the Retrievers went 2-2 last week, losing to Georgetown mid-week, but taking two of three from conference-rival Binghamton to open league play last weekend.
The honor is the first league-wide accolade for UMBC this season and the first since Anthony Gatto was named the America East Rookie of the Week on Mar. 19, 2012.
Coluccio paced the Retriever offense last week as America East play opened around the league. After striking out in his only appearance against the Hoyas, the junior exploded over the weekend to help UMBC claim its first conference series win since 2010. Coluccio hit .636 (7-for-11) against the Bearcats, picking up multi-hit games in each of the three contests.
In the series opener on Saturday, Coluccio was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, rapping two doubles, scoring two runs, and driving in one more. He continued his hot hitting on Sunday, going a combined 4-for-8 in the twin bill which the two squads split.
For the season, Coluccio is hitting .474 (9-for-19) in seven games played.
UMBC returns to the field for a mid-week tilt with local rival Towson on Wednesday at the Tigers’ Scheurholz Park. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
