UMBC Softball Hosts First of Three Tournaments in March

    BALTIMORE – UMBC softball co-hosts its first of three tournaments in the month of March, when the Retrievers welcome Morgan State, Coppin State, Saint Francis (Pa.) and Saint Peter’s to the UMBC Softball Stadium for the UMBC Retrievers Classic. The tournament begins Friday, March 1 and runs until Sunday, March 3. Coppin State will also host two of the tournament games on Saturday.

    On the Retrievers (1-8): UMBC is coming off a 1-3 weekend at the Seahawk Clash, behind a stellar effort from America East Rookie of the Week Bridget O’Malley (Brooklyn, Md./Seton Kenough). O’Malley led the team with a .571 batting average and a .727 on-base percentage. Junior Chelsea Bertoglio (Laguna Hills, Calif./Laguna Hills/Saddleback College) has piloted the Retrievers’ efforts, batting a team-best .364 through two weeks of play and tossing a complete game in UMBC’s first victory of the season, a 7-4 win against Morehead State on Feb. 24.

    On the Bears (1-9): Morgan State picked up its first win of 2013 over the weekend, riding the arm of junior pitcher Jordan Eades. Eades earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honors after registering a 0.48 ERA in three games at the TSU Tiger Invitational, including a shutout victory against Tennessee State. Offensively, the Bears are led by senior Tiffany Rubin, who’s batted .296 on the season and leads the team in runs batted in (five) and home runs (two).

    On the Eagles (2-0): Coppin State swept Virginia State in their season-opener on Feb. 24. Sophomore Candice Van Horn had a game-winning two-run single to give the Eagles a 3-2 victory in game one, while freshman Alyssa Barker drove in four runs as CSU cruised to a 12-0 victory in game two. Cheyenne Gerber went 3-for-3 from the plate and drew four walks in the doubleheader. The Eagles pitching staff has a combined 1.00 ERA and totaled seven strikeouts in the two games.  

    On the Red Flash (2-4): Saint Francis is coming off a 2-2 weekend at the North Carolina A&T Tournament. Chelsy Cosentino has registered a .722 slugging percentage through six games and has scored a team-best nine runs. Cosentino, along with Taylor Parsons are batting .500 thus far this season, while Sabrie Need has a team-best six RBI, The trio were all selected to the all-tournament team for their performances over the weekend. In the circle, Ketrah Devries has thrown two complete games, including one complete game shutout against North Carolina A&T.   

    On the Peacocks (1-7): Saint Peter’s has dropped its last four contests, including a 12-2 loss to Temple in the final game of the Phoenix Clash. Sierra Parker paced the Peacocks with two hits and two RBI, while Lee Harrison and Alexis Gallagher each score in the loss.

    On Friday, parents are encouraged to park in the Stadium Lot. Fans are not permitted to park in the Erickson Building lot on Friday.
