Harris and Cook Named Nominees for America East Basketball Fansí Choice Players of the Year
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. Ė UMBC womenís basketball senior guard Raven Harris (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne/American) and menís basketball senior guard Ryan Cook (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti/Chestnut Hill College) have each been nominated for the 2012-13 America East Fansí Choice Players of the Year.
A winner will be named for both menís and womenís basketball. Voting for the 2013 America East Basketball Fansí Choice Players of the Year will go until noon on Tuesday, March 5 and can been done on the America East Facebook page. The winner will be announced that afternoon via release at AmericaEast.com.
Harris has proved herself to be one of the elite point guards in the America East in her senior season with the Retrievers. She is one of just two players on the team to play in and start all 27 games on the season and has done all the little things for UMBC this season, leading the team in takeaways 21 times and assists 17 times. Harris has recorded three-or-more steals in 20 games, en route to ranking eighth in Division I in steals per game (3.52 spg) and setting UMBC's single-season steals record, currently at 95.
The Virginia Beach, Va., native has recorded 27 double-digit scoring games in her career, with 19 coming in the 2012-13 campaign. Harris has stepped her game up yet another level since conference play began, registering five 20-point scoring games, and ranking in the top-five in the league in scoring (16.0), free throw percentage (.746), assists (4.6), steals (3.4) and minutes played (37.8).
Cook is currently fifth in the America East in scoring at 14.6 points per game and is second in free throw percentage (84.5%). The former walk-on to the Retriever program has scored 1,391 points during his time at Chestnut Hill College and UMBC. The 6í2Ē guard has the seventh-most offensive caroms (65) in the league and averaged 6.4 caroms per contest. Cook has scored in double figures in 71 of 107 collegiate games.
