Track and Field’s Mercedes Jackson Named UMBC Athlete of the Month for December
Sophomore Mercedes Jackson
BALTIMORE – Sophomore sprinter Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) of the track and field team was named the UMBC Athlete of the Month for December 2012 in a poll conducted from Jan. 2-10. Jackson won the vote over men’s basketball’s Brett Roseboro (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown/St. Bonaventure) and women’s basketball’s Brittany Crowell (Brandywine, Md./Gwynn Park/James Madison).
At the indoor track and field season opening meet, the Bison Opener on Dec. 1, Jackson broke her own record twice en route to winning the 60m dash. Having set the record originally at the 2011 Bison Opener and then again at the America East Champions during a gold medal winning performance of 7.49, the sophomore standout lowered her mark to 7.49 in the prelims at Bucknell. Then in the finals, she did herself one better, winning the event with a new record time of 7.48.
In addition to owning the 60m dash record, Jackson holds the 200m dash record, which she also set during the conference meet a year ago.
