Crowell earns spot on All-Tournament Team
PHILADELPHIA – UMBC women’s basketball senior guard Brittany Crowell (Brandywine, Md./Gwynn Park/James Madison) earned a spot on the Hawk Classic All-Tournament Team after leading the Retrievers in scoring in each of the two tournament games. Crowell finished with a team-best seven points as UMBC fell, 79-38 to host Saint Joseph’s in the championship game of the Hawk Classic on Saturday afternoon at Hagan Arena.
SJU (8-4) led from wire-to-wire and had 12 players score in the contest as the Hawks won their third straight contest. Junior guard Erin Shields, the tournament’s MVP, led all scorers with 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the floor. Junior guard Kasie Parker and red-shirt sophomore guard Natasha Cloud also added double-digit points in the victory, finishing with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

SJU used another 10-0 run, behind five points from Shields, to take a 22-5 advantage. The Hawks shot 46.9 percent in the opening half – compared to the Retrievers 28 percent (7-for-25) from the floor – and would lead by as many as 28 points in the stanza.
Saint Joseph’s continued to add to its lead throughout the second half, scoring 19 points off of the Retrievers’ nine turnovers in the period and cruised to victory as UMBC finished the contest shooting at a .276 clip from the field and .053 from beyond the arc.
The Retrievers open America East action after the New Year, hosting the defending America East champion Albany – in a rematch of last season’s America East Championship contest – on Wednesday, Jan. 2. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the RAC Arena.
