Allinder and McCabe Chosen as Captains for 2013 Season

BALTIMORE – UMBC baseball senior Jason Allinder (Snow Hill, Md./Snow Hill/Chesapeake) and junior Rob McCabe (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep) have been named the team captains for the 2013 season, head coach Bob Mumma announced on Wednesday.
“It was really exciting to see a lot of guys get votes [from teammates],” Mumma said. “I’m looking forward to great overall team leadership from not just Jason and Rob, but all of the veterans.”
Allinder was a steadying influence for the Retrievers in 2012, playing in a total of 48 games and starting in 43 of them. Working behind the plate, the Snow Hill, Md. native, recorded a team-best .995 fielding percentage, committing just one error on the season. At the plate, Allinder hit a career-best .273 and notched one of the Retrievers’ biggest hits of the year, a two-out, 2-RBI single in the bottom of the tenth to push UMBC past conference rival Albany.
“Jason really started to take on some leadership last year when he was catching the majority of the ballgames,” said Mumma. “Now a lot of players look up to him and respect him, so I think he’s a great leader for the team.”
After earning the captain position as sophomore last season, McCabe has been tapped for the leadership role again in 2013 for the Retrievers. Despite injuries a year ago, McCabe played in 43 contests for UMBC, making 36 starts. As a sophomore he batted .259 and swiped seven bags, the second-highest total on the team. As a freshman, McCabe was named to the America East All-Rookie Team after hitting .270 with seven doubles and ten RBIs.
“After leading the team last year, Rob seemed to take on an even bigger role this fall during practice,” said Mumma. “His work ethic is second-to-none and he represents his team very well.”
The Retrievers open their 2013 season at the Caravelle Resort’s Baseball at the Beach in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Mar. 1 against NC State. UMBC then takes on West Virginia and Indiana to conclude the opening weekend.
