Senior Pierre De Waal
Senior Andrew Eckhoff
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Following top-five finishes at the Patriot Invitational this past weekend, the UMBC swimming and diving teams won three America East weekly awards, the conference office announced on Tuesday afternoon. Senior Andrew Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) and sophomore Katie Bean (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) swept the diving awards for the second straight week while senior Pierre De Waal (Pretoria, South Africa/Tuks Sport/Cleveland State) earned his second Male Swimmer of the Week accolade this season.
Eckhoff’s tenth honor in the last two seasons comes after sweeping the diving events at the three-day competition at George Mason. The senior started off the meet on Thursday by topping the standings in both the prelims and finals en route to winning the 1-meter event with a score of 275.85. Then on Friday, Eckhoff once again led throughout, claiming the 3-meter competition with a score of 297.20 in the finals.
Bean made it a clean sweep for the second straight week for the Retrievers after leading the team in both diving events in Fairfax. She receives her third career award after placing sixth in the 1-meter and seventh in the 3-meter.
Earning Male Swimmer of the Week for the second time this season, De Waal won two events at the Patriot Invitational, both in season-best times. The senior opened his individual set by taking top honors in the 500-yd. freestyle with a time of 4:31.62 on Thursday and then capped the meet with a win in the 200-yd. butterfly (1:48.29) on Saturday. He also set a season-best in the 200-yd. free while earning a silver medal.
The Retrievers have now won a total of 12 weekly conference awards this season, paced by Eckhoff’s four honors. Senior Mohamed Hussein has been honored three times, followed by De Waal and Bean who have earned two honors and Corinna Darelius who was named Female Diver of the Week back on Oct. 23.
UMBC now has the remainder of the 2012 calendar year off from competition before returning to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 12 to host Old Dominion.
