BALTIMORE – Sophomore outside hitter Hannah Schmidt (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) of the volleyball team was named UMBC’s Athlete of the Month for October 2012 in a poll conducted from November 1-8.  Schmidt won the vote over men’s soccer’s Pete Caringi III (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall), women’s soccer’s Amira Walcott (Beltsville, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt), cross country’s Brandan McGee (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) and Cody Mezebish (Westminster, Md./South Carroll), and swimming and diving’s Mohamed Hussein (Cairo, Egypt/Victory College) and Corinna Darelius (Rye, N.Y./Rye).

In six October matches, Schmidt led the Retrievers to a 4-2 mark by putting away a team-high 76 kills to go along with 66 digs, the third-highest amount on the team.  For the month, she recorded a .192 hitting percentage and also served 13 aces, including four each at Hartford and at Providence.  In addition, Schmidt notched four double-doubles and also set a career high in kills with 19 winners in UMBC’s four-set win over Binghamton on Oct. 19.
