Successful Turnouts for UMBC Women’s Lacrosse Fall Events
BALTIMORE – The UMBC women’s lacrosse team continues to build excitement around its program during the offseason, turning in a pair of successful community events. The Retrievers hosted their second annual crab feast, doubling the size from year one, and welcomed their largest turnout in over a decade to the annual alumni game.
On Sept. 29, the Retrievers drew in 300 people to the Dewey Lowman Post 109 for its annual crab feast, raising $19,000 for the program.
“Though we raised $19,000 and drew 300 people to our crab feast, the dollar amount is secondary to the level of excitement surrounding the program right now,” co-head coach Tony Giro said. “Our community is engaged, our families are engaged and our alumni are actively involved in the program. We feel tremendously lucky to be a part of the growth of the UMBC and its women’s lacrosse program.”
On Friday night UMBC women’s lacrosse welcomed over 40 former members of its program for the annual alumni game and barbeque.
“We are very excited to have such a tremendous response for this year’s alumni game,” said co-head coach Amy Appelt. “Their support of the UMBC family has been great and we are excited to watch our family continue to grow.”
The squad concludes its fall schedule with a pair of play days, the first on Oct. 20 at George Mason and the second coming on Oct. 27 for the second annual Blue Jays “Stick it to Sarcoma” Fall Play Day at Johns Hopkins University. Admission to JHU will be five dollars – which will include a sarcoma wrist band – with t-shirts and raffle tickets available for purchase. All proceeds will be donated to the Hopkins Sarcoma Program.
