BALTIMORE – Freshman outside hitter Sherelle Walker (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) of the volleyball team was named UMBC’s Athlete of the Month for September 2012 in a poll conducted from October 2-9. Walker won the vote over men’s soccer midfielder Milo Kapor (Toronto, Ontario/Emily Carr), cross country runners Cody Mezebish (Westminter, Md./South Carroll) and Brandan McGee (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood), and women’s soccer midfielder Amy Savage (Ottawa, Ontario/Sir Wilfrid Laurier).
Over the course of the Retrievers’ 14 contests during September, Walker led the team with 159 kills, averaging 3.00 kills per set. After recording 52 kills over a four-contest stretch in the middle of the month, the freshman was named both America East Player and Rookie of the Week, in addition to earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team at the Pirate Invitational. Then, in just her second week of conference play, Walker was named the league’s Rookie of the Week again after totaling 39 kills on .419 hitting against New Hampshire and Providence.
For the season, Walker leads the Retrievers in both kills (232) and hitting percentage (.243), while ranking fifth and sixth, respectively, in the America East. In addition, her 22 kills against UNH on Sept. 28 is the highest single-match total for any Retriever this season.
