Women’s Soccer Travels To VCU For Non-Conference Finale
BALTIMORE – The UMBC women's soccer team hits the road for its final non-conference match of the season on Friday, Sept. 14 against VCU. The Retrievers will look to knockoff the Rams for the first time in VCU’s last nine home matches. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Sports Backers Stadium. UMBC (1-6-1) looks to bounce back from a 0-2 week and build momentum for the start of their America East schedule on Sunday, Sept. 23. The Retrievers fell at the hands of Bucknell last Friday, allowing two quick goals to start off the contest, and let one slip away in a 1-0 loss to Longwood on Sunday, surrendering a goal on the Lancers’ only shot of the second half.
Junior goalkeeper Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) recorded nine saves over the weekend to bring her season total up to 52, tying for eighth nationally in Division I in total saves. Kadet sits in fourth place all-time at UMBC in stops (255), 12 shy of third-place Christy Friedrich.
The Rams (3-2-2) are unbeaten in their last three games following a 2-0 weekend in which they picked up a pair of 1-0 victories versus American and Pittsburgh. Senior goalkeeper Kristin Carden led the way with her first two shutouts of the season, marking the ninth and 10th of her two-year career.
Junior forward Courtney Conrad tallied her second goal of the season in the overtime win against the Panthers. Sophomore midfielder Cristin Granados has recorded a team-best five points on the year, tying Conrad with a team-leading two goals and adding an assist.
The all-times series is all tied up as the two programs meet for the first time since Oct. 23, 1996, with VCU taking a 2-1 overtime victory on its home field. UMBC took the first-ever meeting between the two schools the year before, a 4-2 victory.
The contest marks VCU’s Massey Cancer Center Blue Out in support of prostate cancer awareness month.
