7/23/2012

Head Coach Phil Stern enters his 11th season with the Retrievers

BALTIMORE – The UMBC women’s basketball program solidified its non-conference schedule for the 2012-13 season, as announced by head coach Phil Stern on Monday. The slate features squads from nine different conferences, including three teams that competed in postseason tournaments last year.

“We have put together a schedule that will challenge our young ladies on several different levels, while preparing us for the rigors of the America East season,” Stern said. “We will take on several teams that finished at the top of their conferences and we look forward to continuing our local rivalries.”

The Retrievers’ 13-game non-conference schedule – six home games and seven road contests – will commence on the road at in-state rival Morgan State on Nov. 9, before returning to the RAC for the home opener versus Monmouth (Nov. 11) – the first of five straight home contests in the month of November. UMBC hosts local foes Coppin State (Nov. 14), Loyola (Nov. 17) and Towson (Nov. 20) prior to the Thanksgiving break, before wrapping up its homestand against Eastern (Pa.) on Nov. 25.

UMBC hits the road, taking on 2012 Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) participant American (Nov. 27) on the Eagles’ home court, before opening December at Princeton (Dec. 2). The Retrievers will take on their second 2012 WNIT participant within a week when they travels to VCU on Dec. 5 and two days later will return home to host 2012 NCAA Tournament squad Hampton (Dec. 7).

Following a 13-day hiatus for final exams, UMBC will meet UMES – its fifth opponent from the state of Maryland – on Dec. 21, before concluding its non-conference schedule at the St. Joseph’s Tournament. The Retrievers will open against Wagner on Dec. 28 and face either Saint Joseph’s or Fairfield on day two (Dec. 29).

UMBC will once against play a 16-game America East schedule, culminated by the America East Championships in Albany, N.Y.

Stern returns eight players from last year’s roster, including 2012 America East Rookie of the Year Lauren Chase (Bowie, Md./Riverdale Baptist). The Retrievers wrapped up the 2011-12 campaign with a 17-15 overall mark and advanced to the title game of the America East Tournament, after posting a 9-7 record in league play.
