Baseball Hosts Navy Friday to Start Three Game, Home-and-Home Weekend Series

BALTIMORE, MD. – The UMBC baseball team (1-7) hosts local rival Navy on Friday to begin a three game, home-and-home series with the Midshipmen. After Friday’s game at the Baseball Factory Field at UMBC, action will shift to Annapolis, where the two teams will meet at Max Bishop Stadium on Saturday and Sunday.
Start times for the series are 5:00 p.m. on Friday, and 1:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
The Retrievers will send freshman Jon Cobo (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) to the mound in the series opener on Friday against Mids’ junior Ben Nelson. The Retrievers’ rookie lefty has not recorded a decision in his three appearances this year, while posting a 7.36 ERA, but striking out five batters.
Sophomore Jon Cohn (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep) takes the mound for UMBC on Saturday against Navy’s junior righty Johnny Schoberl, as the series shifts south to Annapolis. Cohn has struggled in his second year, recording a 14.85 ERA through his first two games on the hill. Cohn was charged with the loss on Saturday against Army after yielding six earned runs in less than three innings of work.
In the series finally, the Retrievers will send sophomore righty Shane Vlasic (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) to the bump to counter Navy’s Zach Sipe. Vlasic has a 4.22 ERA this season, but has not picked up a decision in either of his two starts.
The local rivals only met once a year ago, with the Mids taking a 4-3 decision in Annapolis. With the game tied heading into the bottom of the ninth, Navy plated the game-winning run on a bases loaded walk to pick up the home win. Rob McCabe (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep) led UMBC, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
In UMBC’s last contest, Towson two-hit the Retrievers, taking the win, 11-0, at Schuerholz Park on Wednesday. Senior Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) and Ian Glassman (Basking Ridge, N.J./Rutgers Prep) were the only two Retrievers to reach base by way of hit against the Tigers.
UMBC’s only win this year came last Sunday in the series finale against Army. The win is the first for the program under first-year head coach Bob Mumma. The former Retriever standout (1990-1992) had been an assistant under former coach John Jancuska for 15 years before getting the head job.
DAWG BITES
UMBC is 1-2 (.333) at the Baseball Factory Field at UMBC this season. The Retrievers did not pick up a home win until their fifth home contest in 2011.
Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) leads the Retrievers with a .353 batting average (6-for-17) so far this season. The rookie outfielder as picked up a hit in four of his six games played this year.
Himmelstein leads UMBC with three homeruns this year, already besting his total from last year (2).
The Retrievers’ five homeruns this year is only seven shy of their total from all of 2011.
