Women's Tennis Runs Win Streak to Four with Three Wins vs. Tough Texas Foes

San Antonio, Texas—The UMBC women’s tennis team completed a three-match sweep during spring break matches in Texas with a 5-2 win at UT-San Antonio on March 19. The Retrievers have now won four straight matches overall and head back to Baltimore with a record of 8-4.

Against UTSA, the Retrievers dropped the doubles point after losing the Nos. 1 and 2 matches by identical 9-8 margins and fell behind 2-0 after dropping the No. 6 singles contest.  But the visitors stormed back in singles, taking the final five contests.

Freshman Heidi Danielsson (Jonkoping, Sweden) got UMBC on the board with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles and senior Alice Chen (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard) tied the match by defeating Micaela Silva, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 1 singles. Freshman Lorena Valente (Florinapolis, Brazil) gave the Retrievers the lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Caroline Dedering at No. 3 singles.

The other two matches went the distance, but sophomore Carmen Jackman (Silver Spring, Md./Blake), clinched the decision for UMBC in a 7-5, 1-6, 6-1 victory over Kavya Menon at the No. 3 slot. Junior Emily Mannix (Hillsborough, N.J.) gave the Retrievers the fifth point by winning a third-set tie-breaker over Vivian Carrillo.

“Alice and Heidi had big days really helped bring us back,” head coach Rob Hubbard said. I am very proud of the team this entire road trip as winning three in a row on the road in a strong tennis region is not a small task. We are now looking forward to spending most of the next month at home.”

Earlier in the week, UMBC blanked Prairie View A&M, 7-0, on March 15, and edged Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 4-2, on March 16. In the latter match, only singles were played. Chen, Valente, Mannix and senior No. 6 Barbara Couto (Teresopolis, Brazil) recorded victories in straight sets.

UMBC will host St. Joseph’s on Wednesday, March 24, to open a five-match homestand.
