BALTIMORE—UMBC Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach Don Zimmerman has announced the Retrievers’ team captains and spring schedule for the 2010 campaign. Seniors Bobby Atwell ( For the second time, Atwell was tabbed a team captain in the fall of 2008, but suffered a torn ACL in the winter and earned a medical hardship waiver to complete his eligibility in the spring of 2010. The defenseman earned an All America citation in 2008 and was named to the America East Conference First Team. He and Camardo are two of ten Retrievers to earn multiple captaincies in school history. Atwell earned All-Championship team honors in 2008 and America East Second Team accolades in 2007. He has competed in 46 games, with 32 starts in three seasons and amassed 86 ground balls and a pair of goals. Camardo was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2009 America East Championships after scoring twice, picking up 12 ground balls and causing four turnovers in two games. The long-stick defensive midfielder recorded a school-record 32 caused turnovers for the campaign and was second on the team with 54 ground balls. He has five goals, four assists and 109 ground balls in three seasons. Eitel has competed in 25 career games for the Retrievers, serving as Carmardo’s understudy for the majority of his tenure. He has been recognized as a hard worker who sets a positive tone and is an inspirational leader of the team. Wimer earned All American and America East First-Team honors in 2008 after an All-Rookie team citation in 2006. The two-way midfielder recorded personal season bests of 24 goals and 18 assists in 2009 and has 98 points (53 goals, 45 assists) after his first three seasons of play. "We are fortunate to have four outstanding leaders serving as captains for this year's team,” Zimmerman said. “As two-time captains, both Bobby Atwell and Mike Camardo have experience serving in this important role. Kyle Wimer, throughout his career here at UMBC, has always led by example while Sam Eitel's passion and commitment is truly inspirational." * * * * * * A return visit to UMBC Stadium by the North Carolina Tar Heels highlights the Retrievers’ 12-game 2010 schedule. The two teams competed in The meeting on Saturday, March 6 at 1:00 p.m., which will be televised by ESPNU/WMAR-TV, begins a challenging four-game stretch for UMBC. Three days later, the Retrievers travel to Homewood Field, to take on Johns Hopkins (ESPNU) on Tuesday March 9, and the following Saturday, March 13, the Princeton Tigers will host UMBC. On Saturday, March 20, UMBC entertains the Maryland Terrapins at noon in another ESPNU/WMAR-TV broadcast. Coach Zimmerman’s forces open the campaign on Saturday, Feb. 20 when they welcome The Retrievers kick off America East Conference play on Saturday, April 3, when they host Stony Brook in a rematch of the 2008 league championship game. UMBC also hosts America East rival The 2010 America East Championships will be played at the higher seed on Wednesday, May 5 and Saturday, May 8.
