Tennis Squads Fall in America East Semifinals

New Haven, Conn.--The men’s and women’s tennis teams bowed out in the semifinal round of the America East Conference Championships.

 

The men fell, 4-0, to second-seeded and defending champion Binghamton. No. 1 doubles squad Nick Savage-Pollock and Fredi Voorman were leading, 8-7, but the No. 3 squad of Logan Bricker and John Dixon were edged, 9-7, and UMBC lost the doubles point. The Bearcats won singles matches at Nos. 1, 4 and 6 to capture the match.

 

UMBC defeated Boston University, 4-0, to take third place. Savage-Pollock/Voorman and the No. 2 doubles squad of Chris Meyer/Allen Tsang won, 8-5, and 8-2, respectively to lead UMBC to the double point. Voorman (No. 2), Joe Adewumi (No. 4) and Tsang (No. 6) won their singles matches in straight sets to help UMBC prevail and finish the campaign at 12-8.

 

After dispatching of Albany in the first round of Friday, the UMBC women ran into 15-time defending champion Boston University in the semifinals on Saturday and tested the Terriers before falling, 4-0. Boston Univ. captured the double point, but in singles, No. 2 Alice Chen and No. 6 Emily Mannix were leading in the third sets when the match was halted. The Terriers won straight set matches at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 singles.

 

The Retrievers finished the season at 7-7.
