Six Named to America East All-Academic Team

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Six members of the UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams have been selected to the 2009 America East Swimming and Diving All-Academic Teams, as announced by the conference Wednesday. Senior P.J. Sterba (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson), junior Zach Vonder Haar (Gahanna, Ohio/Columbus Academy) and sophomore Keilan Freeman (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Argyll Centre) were named to the men’s side, while senior Daniele Surkovich (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) and juniors Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) and Lindsay Sherman (Bethany, Conn./Amity) were named to the women’s side.
Sterba, a computer science major with a cumulative GPA of 3.40, earned silver in the 200 fly and fifth in the 200 free and 100 fly at the 2009 America East Championships, where the men’s side won their sixth straight America East title and 12th straight conference title overall.
Vonder Haar, a chemical engineering major with a 3.62 GPA, placed fifth in the 100 back, sixth in the 100 fly and 10th in the 50 free at the conference meet. Freeman finished sixth in the 200 free and 200 back with a GPA of 4.00 in mechanical engineering.
Surkovich, a graphic design major with a 3.52 GPA, placed sixth in the 200 fly, eighth in the 100 fly and ninth in the 500 free at the conference meet. Kaplanova, a 3.84 GPA political science major, earned bronze in the 200 breast and finished fourth in the 100 breast and 200 IM. Sherman earned silver in the 200 fly, touched sixth in the 100 fly and eighth in the 200 free at the conference meet while majoring in physical therapy with a 3.46 GPA.
