Force 3 UMBC Athlete of the Week: Julie Moore

9/20/2006

Julie Moore caused a number of turnovers for the Retrievers en route to being named Force 3 UMBC Athlete of the Week.

Name: Julie Moore

Sport/Position: Field Hockey/Midfield

Hometown/High School: Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun

Season Stats: 1 goal, 2 points

Career Stats: 19 goals, 46 points

Retrievers Last Week: 1-2 – Lost to Lehigh 3-1 (9/13); Defeated St. Francis (PA.) 2-0 (9/15).

Season Record: 1-5

While she may not have been in the headlines after the UMBC field hockey team picked up its first victory of the season, senior Julie Moore was instrumental on the defensive side of the field, which has garnered her the title of Force 3 UMBC Athlete of the Week.

Moore, a 2005 America East All-Conference First Team selection, 2004 America East All-Conference Second Team honoree, and 2003 America East All-Rookie Team member, is UMBC’s all-time leading scorer with 19 goals and 46 points.

The goals in Friday’s win against St. Francis, however, came from her teammates, freshman Mary Strain and sophomore Amanda Yanulevich.

This year Moore has taken on more of a defensive role, one in which she is not very experienced, but she is starting to adapt.

“Defense is a new position for me,” the Rising Sun, Md., native said, “but each time I go out and play I learn more things and get better at it.”

First-year head coach Lauren Fuchs thinks Moore’s evaluation of herself may be a little modest.  “She caused a lot of interceptions [against St. Francis] and prevented the other team from entering the circle and getting many scoring opportunities,” she said.

A successful team needs a good leader, a role Moore, as one of three captains, has begun to fill.

“It’s a lot different as a captain,” she said.  “In the past I’ve been able to look at someone else for guidance and now everyone is looking at me.”

Fuchs is very pleased with Moore’s performance both on and off the field, and feels the senior is a very strong leader.  “She does a good job leading by example, as can be seen with her play against St. Francis and she always sets the tone for practice,” Fuchs said.

Practice is something that may lighten up over the next few days for the Retriever field hockey team as they prepare for four home games in the next two weeks.

“If we keep improving our play and our opportunities, we’ll keep scoring and the wins will keep coming,” Moore said.

The Retrievers face off against Longwood on Friday at 4 p.m., then take on Rider on Sunday at 1 p.m.
