Athlete of the Week: Stephanie Weigman, Softball

Stephanie Weigman went 2-0 and recorded a save in 14.2 innings of work last weekend, leading the Retrievers to a three-game series sweep at America East rival Stony Brook. The right-hander allowed just two earned runs, good for a 0.95 ERA, and held the Seawolves to only nine hits and a .164 average for the series. Weigman, who fanned nine last week, became UMBC’s all-time wins leader by not allowing an earned run and surrendering just five hits in a complete-game effort in the series finale on Sunday, breaking Lauren Nicholson’s school record with her 58th career victory. The senior from Elkridge, Md., was named America East Pitcher of the Week for her performance. Weigman is also UMBC’s all-time leader in innings pitched (673.2), games started (99) and appearances (131), and she ranks second in complete games (63) and sixth in shutouts (9).
