Athlete of the Week: Abbey McKenney, Swimming and Diving

Junior Abbey McKenney was named the Most Outstanding Female Swimmer at the America East Championships last weekend after winning all three of her individual events to lead the UMBC women’s swimming and diving team to its first conference title since 2008. McKenney broke both the 50-yard freestyle (23.35) and 100-yard freestyle (49.66) school records and also won the 200 free in 1:48.98. Her times in the 100 and 200 free were NCAA consideration marks, while her 100 free time also set America East Championship and Germantown Indoor Swim Center records. The native of Wilmington, Del., was also the anchor on four school record-breaking relays, winning gold in the 200 and 400 free relays in pool record times of 1:34.40 and 3:24.15, respectively, and taking silver in the 800 free and 400 medley relays in 7:21.69 and 3:44.25, respectively. In addition, the 400 and 800 free relays achieved NCAA consideration times.
