Athlete of the Week: Justin Fry, Men’s Basketball

Forward Justin Fry averaged 15.0 points and 5.5 rebounds and shot 68.4 percent from the field to lead the men’s basketball team to a pair of America East victories last week. The graduate student scored a career-high 20 points on 9-of-10 shooting in UMBC’s 84-79 win at Maine on Sunday, and he added three rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block in 20 minutes against the second-place Black Bears. Earlier in the week, Fry tallied 10 points and eight rebounds in the Retrievers’ thrilling 83-79 overtime triumph over Binghamton, scoring four straight points in the extra session, including the go-ahead free throws with 3:03 remaining. The New Bloomfield, Pa., native ranks second in the America East in free throw percentage (.906) and fourth in field goal percentage (.517) against league opponents. Fry, who ranks fifth all-time at UMBC with 113 games played, is averaging 9.2 points and 5.7 rebounds per game this season.
