Athlete of the Week: Michelle Kurowski, Women’s Basketball

Junior guard Michelle Kurowski averaged 29.0 points and shot 67.6 percent from the floor (23-for-34) and 50.0 percent from long distance (5-for-10) in a pair of conference wins last week and was named America East Player of the Week. The league’s leading scorer began the week with a 30-point performance against Binghamton, who was previously unbeaten in league play. Kurowski led the Retrievers to the 55-38 victory with 12-of-19 shooting, including 3-of-7 from 3-point range. The Hicksville, N.Y., native, then nearly matched her output in UMBC’s 69-54 win over Vermont on Saturday, tallying 28 points on 11-of-15 shooting, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc. She also added three assists, three steals and four rebounds against the Catamounts. Kurowski, who leads the America East with 16.2 points per game this season, is averaging 21.2 ppg in five league contests. She now ranks 10th all-time at UMBC with 1,087 career points.
