Athlete of the Week: Chris De La Rosa, Men’s Basketball

Chris De La Rosa averaged 18.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game in a pair of home contests last week, shooting 48.4 percent from the floor and 41.7 percent from 3-point range while playing in 79 of 80 possible minutes. The junior point guard posted his third 20-point performance in his last five outings with a 21-point effort in UMBC’s 68-67 victory over Niagara on Dec. 30, draining a career-high three treys and adding four rebounds and four assists. Then against Stony Brook on Jan. 2, De La Rosa scored 16 points, grabbed six boards and dished out eight helpers. The native of Washington Heights, N.Y., has scored in double figures in six consecutive games, averaging 18.8 points and 6.8 assists in that span. He has been directly responsible for over 50 percent of UMBC’s field goals this season, recording 76 and adding 90 assists on UMBC’s 328 total field goals. De La Rosa, who leads the America East and ranks 12th in the NCAA with 6.4 assists per game, needs six more helpers for 300 in his collegiate career, and his 5.52 apg as a Retriever ranks second in school history behind Jay Greene’s 5.60 apg.
