Athlete of the Week: Emily Witsaman, Women's Volleyball

Senior middle blocker Emily Witsaman led UMBC with a team-best .311 hitting efficiency as the Retrievers went 1-1 last week, falling at American in five sets, but starting conference play with a victory, defeating Stony Brook in four. The Medina, Ohio native tallied 12 kills on 29 swings (.310) and sent away two blocks in the loss in Washington, D.C. In the conference opener, Witsaman again hit over .300 and recorded four block assists as UMBC turned away the Seawolves.
Since returning to the lineup from injury after nearly a year away from the court, the senior is hitting .315, good for second in the America East. In addition, she leads the league in blocking, averaging 1.06 blocks per set and ranks tenth in the conference in kills per set with a 2.44 average.
