UMBC Athlete of the Week: Michelle Kurowski, Women’s Basketball
Nov. 22-28, 2010
Junior guard Michelle Kurowski averaged 19.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals in three contests last week, and she was named America East Player of the Week for her efforts. The Hicksville, N.Y., native shot 54.1 percent (20-for-37) from the floor, including 58.3 percent (7-for-12) from 3-point range, and she was a perfect 10-for-10 from the foul line. To start the week, she scored eight points against George Mason, all in the first half, and added four rebounds and four steals. Kurowski then broke out of her early-season slump at last weekend’s Iona Thanksgiving Classic, averaging 24.5 points and earning All-Tournament Team honors. In the first game against Toledo, she scored 24 points and matched career highs with seven assists, four steals and four 3-pointers. Then in UMBC’s 75-55 win over Brown, she scored a season-high 25 points and added four assists and five rebounds. With the back-to-back 20-point performances – her first two of the year – Kurowski raised her season scoring average from 8.4 points per game to 13.0, and she also raised her season shooting percentage by nearly 100 points.
