UMBC Athlete of the Week: Sean Rothe, Men’s Soccer
Sept. 12-18, 2011
Sean Rothe was named America East Co-Player of the Week after tallying a career-best five points in the Retrievers’ 4-3 double-overtime loss to No. 1 Maryland on Tuesday. The fifth-year senior, who missed the 2010 campaign due to a knee injury, had shifted from right midfield to right back for the match and still produced UMBC’s best single-game performance of the season. Rothe initiated a highlight-reel passing sequence and recorded the primary assist on a back-heel pass to Pete Caringi III, who tied the game at 1-1 in the 52nd minute. The Dundalk, Md., native then proceeded to score two goals 71 seconds apart to erase a 3-1 deficit and draw UMBC even with 6:17 remaining in regulation. His first goal was a 27-yard bomb that hit off the bottom of the crossbar into the upper-right corner of the net. Rothe, who had recorded three goals and eight total points in his first 61 games as a Retriever, now leads the team and is tied for fourth in the America East with five points on the season.
