Athlete of the Week: Erin Brown, Women’s Basketball

Erin Brown led the Retrievers to a 2-1 week, averaging a team-best 18.3 points per game on 43.5 percent shooting, including 45.0 percent from long distance, and she added 4.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game, as well. The senior forward posted back-to-back 20-point performances in the Retrievers’ two wins, scoring 24 points against UMES and 21 points against George Mason to earn America East Player of the Game honors in both contests. She scored 16 of her 24 points against the Lady Hawks in the second half, including 10 points during UMBC’s deciding 12-3 run late in the game. The Bethesda, Md., native was 9-of-18 from the floor in the contest and added a team-high seven rebounds, along with three assists and three steals. Then against the Patriots, Brown sparked the Retrievers’ deciding 17-4 run in the final five minutes with a 3-pointer, then put the nail in the coffin with her career-high fifth triple to cap the spurt. She was 7-of-12 from the floor, including 5-of-8 from long distance. Brown added 10 points and six boards against Hampton on Saturday to finish the week. The America East’s leading scorer this season, averaging 16.0 ppg, Brown currently ranks fourth all-time at UMBC with 140 career 3-pointers, and she is 11th with 1,068 career points.
