6/29/2009 Men's Basketball Inks Virginia All-State Guard Jamar Wertz
Senior Cornelia Carapcea (Constanta, Romania) and junior Dominic Devaud (Baltimore, Md.) were named America East Scholar Athletes for women’s tennis and men’s indoor track and field, respectively, the conference announced Tuesday. The conference named members of teams in the 15 championship sports which America East offered in the winter and spring seasons, that represent the best of the America East Conference both academically and athletically.

6/29/2009 Men's Basketball Inks Virginia All-State Guard Jamar Wertz
Baltimore, Md.—Head Men’s Basketball Coach Randy Monroe announced today that Jamar Wertz (Suffolk, Va./King’s Fork) has signed a grant-in-aid form and will attend UMBC in the fall of 2009. The Virginia High School Coaches Association Group and the Virginia Associated Press named Wertz to the AAA Second-Team All-State boys’ basketball squad after the 2008-09 season. The six-foot-three, 185-lb. wing guard averaged 14.2 points per game last season and helped the Bulldogs (31-1) win the title of the VHSL boys’ basketball state championship.

Gray, O’Rourke Continue Softball Careers in Sweden
Former UMBC softball players Ashley Gray and Carla O’Rourke spent their summer playing for the Karlslund Eagles in Örebro, Sweden. Gray and O’Rourke join a growing number of Retrievers to play professionally overseas after using up their collegiate eligibility, including Megan Oursler in 2005, Amy Sadowl in 2006 and Lauren Nicholson in 2007.
Retriever Class of 2008 Shines On and Off Field
On Thursday, May 22, 2008, UMBC celebrated its 50th commencement exercises. Among the nearly 1,200 undergraduates receiving their diplomas at the First Mariner Arena that afternoon were 49 student-athletes who represented the school with class and dignity for the past four or five years.

Outstanding Scholars Put Retrievers at Head of Pack
It's not man-bites-dog news for the athletes at UMBC to excel more in the classroom than on the field. Still, all things considered, two such athletes have carved out a special place for themselves. Yes, two teams achieving milestone victories this season is impressive enough. But how about a distance runner winning a national academic award and a basketball player earning salutatorian honors in the same year? Isaac Matthews, named Arthur Ashe Jr. Male Sports Scholar of the Year by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine, and Erin Voss, with the second-highest grade point average in UMBC's senior class, graduate Thursday, and they elevate the school's academic reputation as they do.
