Sophomore Ilia Rattsev of the UMBC men's swimming and diving team has been named UMBC Athlete of the Week presented by Northwestern Mutual for the week ending 2/19.
At the 2018 America East Swimming and Diving Championships, Rattsev helped the men earned their first America East championship since 2012-13. The sophomore earned gold in the 50, 100, and 200 free events, while also helping the 200 medley relay, 200 free, 400 free relay reams to first-place finishes.
Rattsev broke the school record in the 50 free, clocking in with a time of 20.00, shaving .05 seconds off of Gregor Spoerlein's time set back in 2016. He also helped the men's 200 medley relay team break the conference record with a time of 1:28.61, shaving .30 seconds off Boston University's time set back in 2011. The time also clocks in as a new school record, a mere .20 seconds off the previous record.
The sophomore also earned NCAA B cuts in all three of his individual events.
