Hassan Omar broke one of the oldest records in the UMBC record book, the 5,000m run, at the Armory Collegiate Invitational this weekend. The Frederick, Md. native crossed the line with a time of 14:32.71 to eclipse Michael Sterling’s time of 14:39.45 set back in 1981. This is the second time that Omar has broken a school record this indoor season after claiming the top spot in the UMBC record book in the 3,000m run (8:23.50) on Jan. 24 at the NYU Team Challenge.
Omar’s success during the indoor season continues his excellent 2013-14 year as the sophomore led the Retrievers to the 2013 America East Cross Country championship. He took third at the conference meet to earn All-Conference honors and then later earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors. In addition, he broke two school records during the fall season.
