Outstanding Scholars Put Retrievers at Head of Pack
It's not man-bites-dog news for the athletes at UMBC to excel more in the classroom than on the field. Still, all things considered, two such athletes have carved out a special place for themselves. Yes, two teams achieving milestone victories this season is impressive enough. But how about a distance runner winning a national academic award and a basketball player earning salutatorian honors in the same year? Isaac Matthews, named Arthur Ashe Jr. Male Sports Scholar of the Year by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine, and Erin Voss, with the second-highest grade point average in UMBC's senior class, graduate Thursday, and they elevate the school's academic reputation as they do.
The Baltimore Sun's Gary Lambrecht's Feature on Brian Hodges
Whether he is in the classroom or on the basketball court, UMBC junior guard Brian Hodges is determined to make the most of his time.
Hodges has been in the starting lineup just three times this season for the Retrievers, who over the past two years have discovered quite the sixth man in their rotation. This season, Hodges leads the team with a 16.2-point average despite playing just 24.9 minutes per game.

Three of a Kind
UMBC juniors Kristin Drabyn, Morgan Hatten and Amanda Robinson have become regulars in the Retrievers’ starting lineup and are best friends off the court. The trio spent last spring break volunteering with Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans, helping with the Hurricane Katrina relief effort.
Jack of All Trades
Men’s basketball team manager Armando Cadogan, a.k.a. Panama, does it all. When he's not in school or helping out with the team, Panama appears on the HBO series The Wire, designs clothing, has his own record label and is a musician.

3/21/2008 "A Season to Remember" Ends in NCAA Tournament Setback to Second-Seeded Georgetown, 66-47 Raleigh, N.C—It was a basketball season like none other before at UMBC. But all good things must come to an end, and this memorable campaign did for the Retrievers today. They fought valiantly but fell to the second-seeded Georgetown Hoyas, 66-47, in the first round of the Midwest regional of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. The sold out crowd of 19,477 and a national televised audience witnessed the scrappy and beloved Retrievers (24-9) pester the Hoyas (28-5) into 15 turnovers. However, UMBC could not crack the top defense in the nation and scored a season-low 47 points in the defeat.
